The DoD Breast Cancer, Distinguished Investigator Award is designed to support established researchers who want to explore innovative approaches to combat breast cancer. Ideal candidates are proven leaders in their fields, known for their creativity and productivity. The Principal Investigator (PI) must propose research that represents a significant shift from their previous work and addresses critical challenges in breast cancer, rather than minor updates or changes to their existing research.
While prior experience in breast cancer research is not mandatory, the application must center on this topic. Researchers from various disciplines are encouraged to contribute novel ideas relevant to breast cancer. It is required for the PI to form a research team with the necessary expertise to achieve project goals. If the PI lacks breast cancer experience, they must include at least one collaborator with expertise in the field. Additionally, the team must consist of two or more breast cancer consumer advocates—individuals diagnosed with breast cancer who are active advocates. These advocates should provide informed insights into the research process and its impact on the breast cancer community.
